Passing the Exams to study abroad is one mandatory requirement set up by many Universities, for getting admission in their Universities. Studying abroad in reputed Universities is the dream for many Indian Students. To accomplish this dream the students have to pass through and fulfill various administrative, and academic requirements set up by the Governments and Universities where the students intend to study.

List of Entrance Exams to Study Abroad in 2023

For many Universities, the student who intended to get admission will require to complete one language exam and a standardized exam. But in majority of the cases, the student may get an exemption from the standardized exam but must complete the Language exam, which is the language proficiency exam in English. Based on the course/country/university it is required to provide a passing score on the standardized test also.

Language Exams

The language exam will test the ability of the candidate to speak,  write, and the ability to communicate in the specified language. The student needs to get a passing score in the language exam to proceed for admission to any overseas University. The language exam is mandatory to get admission to any kind of course, Undergraduate, Post Graduate, Certificate, or Diploma Course of any University.

There are various Language Proficiency Exams like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, CAE, CPE, etc. Different countries will prefer different examinations and the candidate has to check with the respective University about their preferred exams to study abroad.

1. IELTS: IELTS exam is the preferred exam for getting admission to universities in the countries of UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Once appeared for the exam, the achieved IELTS Score is valid for two years.
2. TOEFL: TOEFL exam is the preferred exam for universities in the US and Canada, while it is not accepted at many of the colleges in the UK. Post-declaration of the result, the score is valid for two years.
3. PTE: PTE exam is accepted at a few colleges in the US and most colleges in the UK. CAE and CPE are given preference by British universities. Further, PTE Academic scores are valid for up to two years from the date of the exam.

 

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

What is IELTS?

The full form of IELTS is The International English Language Testing System (IELTS). IELTS is one of the most important exams to study abroad. It is designed in such a way as to help people who want to study, work or want to migrate to the countries like Australia, Canada, and New Zealand where English is the native language.

The IELTS exams to study abroad will assess the candidate’s ability to speak, read, write, and listen to the English language will be tested, and the candidate will be graded from 1-9.  The British Council and Cambridge University Press are jointly conducting IELTS throughout the world.

9	Expert user	The test taker has fully operational command of the language. Their use of English is appropriate, accurate and fluent, and shows complete understanding.
8	Very good user	The test taker has fully operational command of the language with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriate usage. They may misunderstand some things in unfamiliar situations. They handle complex and detailed argumentation well.
7	Good user	The test taker has operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings in some situations. They generally handle complex language well and understand detailed reasoning.
6	Competent user	The test taker has an effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings. They can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations.
5	Modest user	The test taker has a partial command of the language and copes with overall meaning in most situations, although they are likely to make many mistakes. They should be able to handle basic communication in their own field.
4	Limited user	The test taker’s basic competence is limited to familiar situations. They frequently show problems in understanding and expression. They are not able to use complex language.
3	Extremely limited user	The test taker conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar situations. There are frequent breakdowns in communication.
2	Intermittent user	The test taker has great difficulty understanding spoken and written English.
1	Non-user	The test taker has no ability to use the language except a few isolated words.
0	Did not attempt the test	The test taker did not answer the questions.

 

The higher the score, the higher the proficiency in English. The IELTS score requirement will vary from Immigration body, university, institution, and workplace. The score requirement also depends on what the candidate wants to do in particular country either work or study.

IELTS Test Types

IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are part of the IELTS exams to study abroad, and these tests will assess the proficiency of the candidate in English language skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

IELTS Academic

The IELTS Academic test is suitable for those wanting to study in an English-speaking environment or university (higher education). You can also take IELTS Academic for professional registration purposes.

IELTS Academic can be taken in a test center on paper or on computer, and can now also be taken online from home or another private location that has a stable internet connection.

For Academic and General Training you take the same Listening and Speaking tests but different Reading and Writing tests. The candidate has to select the correct test as per his requirement and has to prepare for the correct test type.

The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections of all IELTS tests are completed on the same day, with no breaks in between them.

The Speaking test, however, may be scheduled up to a week before or after the other tests. If the candidate booked, the IELTS online, the speaking test, will usually take place before the other tests. The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

IELTS General Training

The IELTS General Training test is suitable for those applying to study below degree level. This includes an English-speaking school or college. It can also be taken for work experience or other employment training.

IELTS General Training is also required for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK. The test features everyday English language skills that one needs to have in social and workplace environments.

IELTS General Training is available to take on paper and on computer only and only be taken in a test center.
